A Lesson on Perspective

Perspective has to do with your point of view.

With all the football games this weekend, imagine you are sitting in the end zone of a football field directly under the goal post watching your favorite team. Looking toward the middle of the field, you see a giant beach ball on the 50-yard line…the biggest beach ball you’ve every seen. From your point of view, exactly half of the beach ball is red and half is white. The ball is positioned in such a way that the dividing line between the red half and the white half is directly in the center of your line of vision.

Now imagine that two of your friends, employees, coworkers, or customers are sitting in the stands. One is sitting ten rows up on the 50-yard line to your right and the other is sitting in the identical seat on the 50-yard line to your left.

Suppose you ask both people to accurately describe the color of the beach ball. It is likely that one will describe the ball as red and the other will describe the same ball as white. Which one is right? Which one is wrong? Of the three of you, who is in the best position to provide the best answer?

Forcing yourself to look at things from a different point of view is almost always a good idea
